Almost. Our Tobacco Original Edition is the first MELIA roll-up leather chess set and features traditional non-magnetic wooden pieces.

All other current MELIA chess sets feature our signature magnetic system, with integrated magnets inside every chess piece. The magnetic force is carefully calibrated to provide stability while preserving the natural movement and tactile feel of traditional wooden chess.

Yes. Every MELIA chess piece is handcrafted from premium hardwoods including boxwood and acacia. Depending on the edition, pieces are finished with natural satin lacquer or multiple layers of premium PU lacquer.

Every chess set is handcrafted in Europe by experienced leather artisans using premium European materials and traditional leatherworking techniques.

We exclusively use premium European leather sourced from LWG Gold Certified tanneries. Depending on the collection, we use full-grain leather, nubuck leather or premium floater leather.

Leather chess sets may look similar at first glance, but the craftsmanship and materials behind them can differ significantly.

Every MELIA chess set is handcrafted in Europe using genuine LWG Gold Certified leather, individually finished hardwood chess pieces and carefully engineered magnetic technology developed for real play. Our boards are produced in small batches rather than mass production, with meticulous attention to every detail—from leather selection and stitching to the calibration of every magnet.

Our magnetic roll-up design was specifically developed for travel by yacht, train, private jet and luxury holidays while maintaining the playing experience of a traditional chess set.

The playing surface measures 38 × 30 cm (15 × 11.8 in) with 3.5 cm (1.38 in) squares, providing a comfortable playing experience while remaining compact enough for travel.
